Hyundai – the automaker that came in and conquered our car market with the Santro now has an array of cars selling here. Eon is its cheapest entry level vehicle here, which was introduced in October 2011. Eon 1.0 is priced at around Rs 2.5 to 3.83 lakhs which makes a lot of economic sense. The company has brought out the more powerful engine for the Eon in May 2014, following criticisms on its underpowered engine. More details on the Eon.
Let us begin from the exterior designing. The headlights are rather large and Hyundai’s famed fluidic design is evident. The bumper at rear in Eon is sharp and broad at the corners giving the car a curvy look which gives the driver a clear view while reversing the vehicle. There is a chrome strip under the bonnet in addition to the new shaped grill, clear wheel arches and spiky tail lamps. The top model of Eon features body colour bumpers, ORVM’s, sporty roof antenna with fog lamps, full wheel covers, remote keyless entry, driver airbags and audio system with iPod and USB connectivity.
Coming to interiors, Hyundai impresses with its sense of space and comfort. The black and beige cabin lends an upmarket feel. The steering is a three spoke design with manual height adjustments on it. The centre dash has a slight niche inwards and there is a large glove box and bottle holders in the door pads and in front of the gear lever. The well cushioned seats with integrated head rests promises good amount of head room and leg room. The plastics used are of high quality and finish. Hyundai Eon has a large boot area of 215 litres of capacity which can be further increased by folding the rear seats if needed.
Now comes the main part – Hyundai Eon engine. The earlier 814 cc engine is now improved to a 998 cc. The older engine produced 56 bhp of power and a torque of 74.56 NM. The larger Eon 1.0 Kappa Magna Plusengine, which has DOHC and Dual VTVT technology, now has the capacity to produce 69 bhp power and 94 NM torque. The Euro 5 compliant engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. An ARAI certified fuel economy of 20.3 kilometres per litre is claimed by the company. Hyundai Eon is available in 8 variants namely – D-Lite, D-Lite+, D-Lite+ LPG, Era+, Era+ LPG, Magna+, Magna+ LPG and Sportz. They differ in the option of fuel, air conditioning, power steering, central locking and some additional luxury features.
All said there are a few hitches in the Eon like the light steering, high vibrations from the engine and an unsettling ride on extremely bad roads.
